The Netherlands Red Cross seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering and
to improve the situation of vulnerable people. The Netherlands Red Cross
helps, protects and takes care of people that are victims of war, conflict
and disaster, and those who need assistance because of other circumstances.
The Netherlands Red Cross Society was established in 1867. Its branch
structure covers the entire country. Currently there are approximately 330
branches. At a higher level these branches co-operate in 66
districts. They in turn are supported by professional staff of the
National Office. At a local level the work is carried out by some 34,000
volunteers. The Netherlands Red Cross is supported by 591.000 contributing
members and donors who provide financial assistance on a regular basis.
Its turnover in 2007 was € 62.5 million euros.
The professional staff at the National Office carries out a variety
of tasks delegated to them by the Society (international assistance,
tracing, special accommodation for and the care for terminally ill
children). It supports the districts, and represents the organization
internationally. The staff consists of approximately 450 persons (275 fte).
The Netherlands Red Cross is part of the international Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement. The Movement consists of the International Committee of
the Red Cross, the 186 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and
the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Social care
- Domestic activities focus on people who are chronically and
terminally ill, disabled or lonely. The aim is to reduce loneliness and
increase resilience. Activities include befriending, recreational activities
and the care for terminally ill children.
- International activities focus on supporting the national society, so
they can assist the most vulnerable people in their community. We support
several activities in the area of health, HIV/AIDS, water and sanitation and
disaster preparedness.
Disaster relief
- Domestic activities focus on assisting people when a disaster occur, but
also on other vulnerable groups within the Netherlands. Activities include
medical assistance, tracing, and first aid.
- International activities focus on disaster
response. Activities comprise emergency relief, rehabilitation.
Unique activities
- The Red Cross is a unique organisation. Its activities are based on
seven fundamental principles. With respect to wars and conflicts its role in
upholding International Humanitarian Law is stated in the Geneva
Conventions. Dissemination of this law and furthering the application
of the Conventions is an important activity for each National Society, in
peace time as well as in times of war.
- Furthermore the Red Cross has an important role in advocacy for those
vulnerable groups it supports, giving them a voice in debates on their
situation, underlining their vulnerability and calling for parties to
co-operate in improving their lives.
