3FM Serious Request 2014: Ghetto Radio

Project information

Raising awareness on a range of topics related to the rights of young people is extremely important. Many people are unaware of their rights, also in relation to sexual violence. Radio is one of the media that has a wide reach in the city among which in the slums.
A Radio station was founded in Nairobi, Kenya, called Ghetto Radio 89.5FM. The station has become the biggest radio station for the youth in Nairobi, with especially many listeners in the slums. Every year around Christmas Serious Request is organized by this radio station in Nairobi. In contrast to the Dutch Serious Request the aim is not to raise money, but to raise awareness around a central theme. In 2014, the theme was ‘Ni Jukumu Letu’, focussing on human rights, in particular sexual intimidation of women. Specific themes were sexual violence and respect for women, sexual and reproductive health and rights, for instance early pregnancies and abortions, and the rights of the people living in slums.

The youth of Nairobi, in particular those living in the slums.
