Partners for Resilience: Guatemala

Project information

In Guatemala fifty-one percent of the population have an income of less than US$ 2 per day. These poor populations face chronic food insecurity and lack access to drinking water. Moreover, the Central America region is a multi-hazard prone area, and especially Guatamale is more vulnerable as it deals with heavy rainfall and is regularly affected by floods and hurricanes. The intensity and frequency of climatic events affects ecosystems and thus, livelihoods. Public spending unfortunately does not adequately respond to the needs of local communities, and the development policies do not foster resilience and sustainability, leaving the poorest of the population in a dire situation.
The project aims to reduce the impact of natural hazards on vulnerable community members. It increases the resilience of communities to disasters, climate change and environmental degradation. The project also increases the capacity of civil society organisations (CSO's) to cope with these natural hazards.

The target group is the most vulnerable population in the drought zone in the river basin of the Motagua river and other rivers with a special attention to indigeonous people, youth and the elderly. The programme will reach between 750,000 - 1,000,000 world wide, it is organized by the 'Partners For Resilience', which The Netherlands Red Cross is a member of. Other partners include CARE Nederland, Cordaid, Wetlands International and The Red Cross.
