Why
The Hellenic Red Cross (HRC) is providing humanitarian assistance to the migrants (as part of the Europe Migrant Operation), and requested support to strengthen the hygiene promotion. Following discussions with the Federation, Hellenic Red Cross, British Red Cross and Netherlands Red Cross it was agreed to do a “Training of Trainers on Hygiene Promotion”. Europe has seen hundreds of thousands of migrants cross both its land and sea borders in 2015. Migrants arrive in Greece, Italy, and Hungary, with some 750,000 via the Mediterranean, the most commonly used route to Europe, facing dangerous journeys that have left more than 3,000 dead. There are many groups—Afghans, Eritreans, Kosovars, Iraqis, Albanians—fleeing different conflicts and abuses heading for Europe, but the continuing armed conflict in Syria is the leading cause for population movement. Between January and October 2015, there were almost 180,000 asylum applications from Syrians alone. The training programme was held in April 2016 in the Red Cross Office in Thessaloniki.
