Why?
Twelve months on, the virus continues to transmit at worrying levels. As of 15 September 2019 there have been a total of 3,129 cases and 2,095 deaths. The outbreak is still spreading fast and in the past 21 days there have been 209 cases. It is likely that this number is higher and some cases may not have been reported due to insecurity. This is the tenth and largest Ebola outbreak ever experienced in DRC and the second largest outbreak in the world after the 2014 outbreak in West-Africa. The situation in North Kivu is exacerbated by weakened health systems, endemic health issues, highly insecure areas, political instability and migratory flows. There have been several cases reported in Goma and as this is a major city in DRC, it dramatically increases the chances the outbreak spreading unless it is contained immediately.
