Why?

Heavy seasonal monsoon has brought strong winds and heavy rains across large parts of Myanmar since the beginning of July this year, causing increased water levels in major rivers and floods in many regions and states. As of 1 August 2018, Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Tanintharyi, Magway, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady regions as well as Mon and Kayin states have been affected. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), forecasts heavy rains the next week, and the danger level of several rivers is either exceeded or is close to the danger level. The DMH has issued flood warnings for several rivers (Chindwin, Ngawun, Sittoung, Bago) over the last week where water levels have approached or exceed the danger levels. Based on information from the Government’s Department for Disaster Management (DDM), 147,613 people (cumulative figure) have been displaced since 9 July (see table below), sheltering in evacuation sites or staying with relatives and host families. A total of 16 people are also reported to have died due to the floods. As at 1 August, 133,318 people are still staying in 299 evacuation sites or with family members. It should be noted that detailed figures are difficult to assess at this stage and there remain some discrepancies in the figures being reported by different organizations. Many people have also started to return to their homes and evacuation sites are being closed Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Tanintharyi, Magway, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady regions as well as Mon and Kayin states have been affected.
