Why?
To contribute to the reduction of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) and comprehensive care for the survivors of SGBV Since April 2015, Burundi has faced a deteriarating socio-political and security situation in the pre- and post-electoral period. This period is characterized by disputes and violations of human rights, attacks by armed groups, assassinations and arrests. This resulted in refugee movements to neighboring countries and internally displaced persons. This situation also has serious repercussions on humanitarian needs and living conditions. Due to limited budget allocation of an existing Netherlands Red Cross project, some activities were not fully funded and NorCross has decided to step-in to complement funding The Municipality of Bujumbura
What?
Through:
– provision of a comprehensive sexual education for youth, especially girls, in the project targeted schools (39) as well as with adults in the community.
– Hygiene and dignity kits (menstrual hygiene, cloth for mother and children) to be stored and provided to the survivors when accommodated in the safe shelter.
– Small study to better understand some forms of SGBV and barriers to accessing to services (recommendation of the MTR carried out in April 2018)
– legal and economic support for survivors (access to more SGBV survivors making this request) which is not only a means of livelihood or access to justice but also a way to help survivors to better cope with distress and regain self-confidence.
Who?
The project aims to support boys and girls in the age of 15 to 24.
